Five percent
of the general population develop voice problems sometime during
their lives. Most problems are caused by using the voice in a damaging
way or pushing it past its limits. Professional voice usersactors,
singers, teachers, preachers, broadcasters, salespeople, and other
fulltime talkersare especially at risk for injuries caused
by overuse or misuse of the voice.
This
site offers information on vocal health and where to get treatment
when you have a problem. There's a lot of folklore out there
about the voice, and a lot of medical research that isn't always
presented well for the general public. That's why I built this
site on a foundation of science, but with plenty of common
sense. I've taught voice for more than 25 years, and I really
want to help you sound your best! I'm also a licensed speech
pathologist and a lifelong singer and theater artist. You can
find out more about me on the Author page.
The Archive has
useful articles I've written for performing artists' magazines.
